Scrapbook Assignment The History of the United States of America (1770-1880) 

Objective:

  • Students will make a scrapbook detailing American History between the years 1770-1880.

 Learning Goals:

  • Massachusetts Curriculum Standards USI.1 to USI.41
  • Reinforce student learning of U.S. History I

 Materials Needed:

  • Construction paper or scrapbook album
  • Photographs, maps and drawings
  • Tape, glue, scissors, pen, pencil, markers, and white paper

 Students will…

  • Recreate the history of America using facts, critical thought and personal interpretations.
  • Include thirty-two pre-assigned topics (events, people, ideals, concepts, etc…).
  • Write 1-paragraph (5-7 sentences) or more about each of the thirty-two topics; in addition students will write a 2-page summary about America between 1770-1880.
  • Include a photograph, map or drawing representing each of the thirty-two topics.
  • Create a scrapbook cover that represents the United States of America (in your opinion) between 1770-1880.

 Assessment:

  • Students will be assessed on their ability to…
    • convey factual and detailed information regarding each of the pre-assigned topics.
    • accurately express the sights (photo, drawing or map) of each of the pre-assigned topics.
    • include thoughtful reflection (personal opinion) for each of the pre-assigned topics.
    • summarize key events from the history of America between 1770-1880.
 I am looking for clear, factual and descriptive writing that captures the story (history) of the United States of America (1770-1880).  Your personal opinions and reactions belong to you and your beliefs will not impact your grade in any way – you must include your opinions/reactions, but they will never be considered wrong.

 

American History Scrapbook Assignment

A year-long project You are at the beginning of your year-long course on American History which will cover America between 1770s-1880s.  You will study many important and memorable events that have occurred throughout our country’s history.  Throughout the year, you are to collect information regarding each of the thirty-two assigned topics.  Your scrapbooks will be collected following the conclusion of study for each of the topics listed.  You will receive a grade for each individual entry (10 points per topic), as well as a final grade upon completion of all thirty-two topics and 2-page summary.   You must follow all requirements included below: 

  • Include ALL thirty-two topics (minimum of 1-page per topic) in numerical order.
  • Include a photograph, map or drawing for each topic.
  • For each topic include a typed or neatly written 1-paragraph (or more) entry detailing factual information.  This paragraph must also include your personal opinion and/or reaction to each topic (a minimum of 32-paragraphs for the entire assignment).
  • Include a cover that you believe best captures the essence (heart & soul) of America between 1770-1880.
